What Brought Me to the Cisneros Center

National Intern, Fall 2015
I am a girl of many origins.

Since an early age, people could never quite figure out where I was from. My Dad was born and raised in Cairo Egypt, but originally comes from an Italian family, and my Mom comes from a very small village in Portugal. In their late adolescence, facing financial and social struggle, they both came separately to France (where they had me) in the pursuit for a better life. From different backgrounds and different cultures, and despite all the odds they found each other. When my parents first told me their story and how they met each other, I automatically knew that that my life was going to be made of exploring new cultures and opportunities. I love telling people the story of my parents because when I do, I feel so lucky to come from such a diverse and culturally appreciative background.

Coming here to the United States to study is a privilege. And I hope that by interning at The Cisneros Center, I’ll be able to contribute to helping people like my parents find each other.
