Fellow's Corner: Working with American Dream Leaders

by Zessna Garcia-Rios

This month marks our half-way point as Fellows at the Cisneros Center. In the past year I have been given the opportunity to meet incredible young adults. As the 2015 American Dream Leaders move on in their lives and Emily and I meet the new cohort for the spring, I can't help but get excited about their futures.

Last semester, as we worked with the Leaders I was reminded of the importance of really understanding what each individual brings to the table. I'm also reminded that we should never underestimate our youth or their potential. We had in our midst doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and teachers. Each Leader brought a different perspective and carried with them a different light, but they all had a desire to help make our immigrant community's lives better. I am incredibly proud of our Leaders past; Nezly, Samuel, Jean, Ariana, and Lety. It was a pleasure being your friend and mentor and I cannot wait to see what you will do with your lives.

This month Emily and I will begin training for our Spring 2016 American Dream Leaders. I am very excited to meet new students and greet the year with new energy and light.
