As a native of Northwest Arkansas, I am honored to be serving the community that watched me grow. In the past two weeks, Emily and I have enjoyed some down home hospitality from our neighbors and friends in the region. I have never been more excited to come back home.

As a journalist and an immigrant myself, stories of real people and their struggles have always been important to me. I carry with me the identity of an immigrant and the identity of a DREAMer in pursuit of my American Dream. Our immigrant neighbors in Northwest Arkansas, whether newer immigrants or already established, all came here with the same idea: to make a better life for themselves and for their family. Every time we meet someone new, I can’t help but think about what brought them to Northwest Arkansas. I can’t help but think about my parents and their immigrant story.

During our training, the one item that stood out to me as the most important was that this work is for the community. As we begin to go into the classrooms, neighborhoods, and homes of our immigrant brothers and sisters, their stories will become our driving force. I look forward to what this year will bring for both Emily and me. My biggest wish is to be able to give back to my community and to continue to elevate the stories of our New Americans in Northwest Arkansas.
