Zessna Garcia – Rios
American Dream Fellow 2015 – 2016
As the work in my home region of Northwest Arkansas continues, I continue to swell with joy. For the past two weeks, Emily and I have been working with the new cohort of American Dream Leaders. The group of Leaders that were picked this round bring so much hope to my heart. I am in love with Northwest Arkansas. I see the potential the region has to become the most welcoming of regions through these Leaders. The work at the Center may be met with difficulty sometimes, but I have good faith that the future of Northwest Arkansas beyond the Center is in good hands.
I am often reminded of my parents in our daily work, “Would my mom or dad be satisfied with this information?”, “Would my parents understand this explanation of services?” The reason I feel I am so attached to helping the people in my community succeed is because I see my parents in every community member. I am also reminded of the sacrifices they had to make in order to make it in the United States. My parents are incredibly talented, intelligent individuals who, against all odds, learned English, learned the American culture and worked hard to get my siblings and I into good schools. My parents are my eternal inspiration.
